The CMIL Mentored Undergraduate Research Program has successfully completed its fourth year in 2024. Our program provides marine science research experiences for San Diego community college students and upperclassmen from SDSU by matching them with a graduate student mentor at SDSU’s Coastal and Marine Institute Laboratory.
This year, we partnered with the Mesa Impactship Program to help support our students. Interns worked with their mentor over the summer on a variety of projects focused on topics like fish habitat use in estuaries, nudibranch feeding preferences, and the effects of climate change on pipefish predation. Interns also participated in professional development courses throughout the summer, workshops on topics like exploring careers in marine science and how to summarize your research. Our graduate student mentors also received training on how to be effective and proactive mentors.
